Rookie Mag Prom took place at the Ace Hotel, where the hip, young, feminist ladies (and a few gentlemen) of New York congregated for vegan cupcakes, fizzy drinks and long hours of dancing to the likes of Carly Rae Jepsen and Cindy Lauper.
The room was a world created by Tavi Gevinson herself— surrounded by pretty lights, smart girls and glitter. Basically, it was the prom you wish you actually had. Not to mention that the decorations were hung very low, as if it were done to accomodate the small Editor-In-Chief.
Among the mass of teenage Rookie readers were some matured New York celebutantes. Ira Glass, Alexa Chung, Dev Hynes and Florence Welch were hovering over the sea of glitter and flower crowns in all their fame and glory. I can account that while the whole room, including myself, smelled like mal odeur, Alexa Chung smelled like fresh figs. If you could snag a whiff of an It-Girl, you would, right??
Above is the queen of female adolescence herself, Tavi Gevinson. As you can tell, she is not amused by my banter.
Before the dance party started, several Rookie writers rejoiced and read their favorite pieces to the attendees. Some promoted self-love, individuality, while some tackled race issues. For some reason, these discussion topics did not feel heavy and irrelevant to the party scene. Despite the loud chatter of the people at the bar at the time, the room was overwhelmed with girl love, which left us all with positive vibez.
If you were impressed by the quality of these photographs, do not fret: these were not taken by yours truly. My lovely friend, and freelance photographer, Jacqueline Harriet has a wonderful blog and personality, that has even more lovely images from the party and her visually pleasing life. - V
